Daemons
« on: November 28, 2010, 06:07:40 pm »
I am working on an RPG for the computer called Daemons.

The goal of the project is to basically, recreate Pokemon and give it a better storyline, improved battle engine, as well as a darker, and overall more mature, theme.

At the moment it is in it's infancy I am rewriting the entire thing from what we had (which was only movement and collision detection) and make it clearer and support loading from a save file. As well as making it easier to code.

What I do have, however, is the storyline where you basically start out working for the evil organization and you defect from them.

Also, I have the battle system worked out where you, the trainer, will now fight. new features changed from Pokemon are:

-Trainer fights
-Up to three "Daemons" out with you at once
-Each Daemon has six slots for moves
-FF XIII-like ability point system for attacking and doing stuff (except you have full control of your team)
-Only the trainer uses items
-If the trainer is KO (or killed maybe) they automatically lose
-You can carry up to nine Daemons with you at once

Once I get the movement code written as well as the images for the maps drawn up I'll post some screenshots.

Spoiler For IMPORTANT NEWS!:
Late last night, Quebec was invaded by a group calling themselves, "Omnimaga". Not much is known about these mysterious people except that they all carried calculators of some kind and they all seemed to converge on one house in particular. Experts estimate that the combined power of their fabled calculators is greater than all the worlds super computers put together. The group seems to be holding out in the home of a certain DJ_O, who the Omnimagians claim to be their founder. Such power has put the world at a standstill with everyone waiting to see what the Omnimagians will do...

Wait... This just in, the Omnimagians have sent the UN a list of demands that must be met or else the world will be "submitted to the wrath of Netham45's Lobster Army". Such demands include >9001 crates of peanuts, sacrificial blue lobsters, and a wide assortment of cherry flavored items. With such computing power stored in the hands of such people, we can only hope these demands are met.

In the wake of these events, we can only ask, Why? Why do these people make these demands, what caused them to gather, and what are their future plans...

Interesting, are you planning to include hundreds of Pokémons or will it focus more on a few ones? I am curious how this will turn out. A calc port would be nice afterward. :)

What happened to your Metroid project for calcs btw? ???

Metriod is still on the books, (though I'm debating on whether or not to make is Ninja Gaiden). But first I need to either learn how use axe or how to write a c++ file to be compiled into asm or c file that can run on calc.

We have 50 atm though we may make more.

Just thought I should mention that when I saw the title I immediately thought of this type of daemon ;D

No, basically, instead of calling them "pokemon" they're called "Daemons" like Demons due to their supernatural abilities.

Ahh well, thanks for showing interest though. ;D

The Ninja Gaiden idea sounds cool. There should be one for calcs. :D

Sadly I tend to not have inspiration on command/request for music, though, so I doubt I would be able to help much. My inspiration comes all of a suddent then vanish. My last song was in May. :(

I have Ninja Gaiden on my computer through a NES emulator. That's where I got the idea. ;D

As for music. that's too bad. :'( Your music is amazing.

On a different note, here's the basic story to the game.

An asteroid hits in a forest. It's carrying a virus that infects the local wild life causing forced evolution on their offspring. You start the game in the early years of Daemons (I think it's a nice approach as Pokemon just plops you down in a world where they've always existed). You are an employee of Paradiso Corp. (Evil group)

You are given your first assignment and your starter Daemon. (In this game, you get this one mandatory and your choice of three comes later) You fail the mission and are ordered to kill the Daemon (Paradiso Corp only allows the strongest of Pokemon). You refuse and ultimately leave the company. Well you return home only to find that your fiancée has been taken by Paradiso. The rest of the game is devoted to finding and saving her.

I've got something special for the end and I don't want to ruin it. :P

The battle system will also be different. You know how you could only have one Pokemon out at a time? (save double battles) Well in this game it will be four-on-four. Three Daemons, and you, the trainer (Yes you can fight in this game). The Daemons surround and protect you. If the trainer is KO'd then they lose the match. Only the trainer can use items. Also you can have up to 9 Daemons in your party.

well, I could do the music. It depends on what you're looking for.  I'm not good with sound effect kind of stuff, but actual soundtrack, yeah, I could do that.

That would be great. You think you could make some battle music for us? We need some without resorting to remixing final fantasy music and the like.

What do you want?  What kind of mood, etc.  Also, do you want a shorter, loopable piece, or a longer one?
Keep in mind that I won't be using electronic instruments.  I write with violins, french horns, flutes and stuff.  When I get on my computer, I'll point you toward some of my stuff in the music showcase forum.  (In the meantime, feel free to go hunting for my topics)

Here are the topics with my music attached:

I think that is all...

Nice! I particularly liked your piano-cello piece. Well for battle music it would have to have a sort of fast paced, inspiring mood. And we should have it a small loopable piece.

I am the main programmer of "Daemons". I am writing it in C++ and using the graphics library SFML. The only help I need is finding a good way to redistribute this game for Linux, since there are no static versions of SFML for Linux. I am going to either have to make over a dozen different package formats to support most of the distros, or find a way to compile static libraries of SFML, and statically link them in the game. For Windows I can just include the DLLs with it.

EDIT: Nevermind, I found a way to make it work.

Hey calcfreak89, welcome here!

I'm glad you are also working on this project. I can't wait to see what you guys will come up with. :)

Also, HOMER-16 you can still use my music as long as you give me credits (as stated in the PM). Some might just not fit well, but hopefully maybe you'll find songs that fit at the right place. Just keep in mind Quest for the Legendary Axe is re-used at other places as well (such as the Axe Parser tribute and Eee Zor intro videos) so it may not sound as original.

I like the game ideas so far. :)
